Training and Certification

Groups of 25 educators train to be facilitators in a Professional Development program. Sessions alternate between training in the protocol (15 hours over 5 sessions), and implementing the protocol (30 hours).

Training Session #1 establishes the Pre-Text protocol: read aloud, ask questions of the text, propose and make art to interpret the text, reflect on the process, and go off on a tangent.

Training Sessions #2, #3, #4, #5 are led by participants who propose and facilitate a particular creative activity of their choice to simulate the dynamic of a classroom.

Protocol for Trainer

    1. Training Workshop 
      • The trainer is responsible for announcing the new 5-session workshop. Announcement Form
    2. Administer Mental Health Survey (English Digital,  Spanish Digital, Italian Printable Admin, Spanish Printable Admin, English Printable Admin.) 4 times
      • At the beginning of Session #1
      • At the beginning of Session #3
      • At the end of session #5
      • 30 days or more after the training
    3. Implementation Reports
      • The trainer observes new facilitators during Pre-Texts implementation and fills out this form: Session Observation Form
      • The trainer collects and reviews folders of implementation reports from new facilitators and submits a copy of each folder to CAI  Report Form Folders for new facilitators include:
        1. Plan for new facilitator’s implementation and follow up meetings
        2. Administer wellbeing surveys 4 times: before, middle, end, after pause
          1. for Children Surveys [Eng, spa. port] Printables for Administration (Eng, spa.)
          2. For youth  Surveys [Eng, esp. port] Printables for Administration (Eng, spa, port)
        3. Coordinate required text with Pre-Texts activities
        4. Weekly “What did we do?” with other facilitators to address challenges.
        5. Family nights for students to facilitate Pre-Texts with parents.

B. Checklist for each session of implementation:

      1. Do participants sit in circles or ovals and see each other?
      2. Do participants use their hands (draw, sew, etc.) while they listen to reading?
      3. Does everyone ask a pointed question to the text and post it anonymously?
      4. Does everyone “adopt” a question to post a response by searching the text?
      5. Do participants invite one another in a chain to consider several responses?
      6. Do students propose activities and develop proposals with the group?
      7. Does the teacher participate in proposing and creating with the students?
      8. Do participants use the text as material for the creative activities?  
      9. Do sessions end with universal participation to reflect on “What did we do?”
      10. Do students “go off on a tangent” or a “leaf” to post a text in the next session?

Protocol for New Facilitators who seek Certification:

  • Facilitators in training participate in the 5 sessions, 15 hours, of capacity building 
  • Facilitators in training submit evidence of good implementation during 30 hours
  • The folders of evidence include A,B,C,D,E items above, for the trainer to review.
  • Re-Certification, every 2 years by the same process of submissions to a trainer.
