Instituto Caro y Cuervo

When: November 2012
Where: Bogotá, Colombia
Institutions: Instituto Caro y Cuervo, Secretariat of Culture and Sports, the Universidad Jorge Tadeo Lozano, and Banco de la República
Facilitator: Doris Sommer

In collaboration with the Secretariat of Culture and Sports, the Universidad Jorge Tadeo Lozano, and Banco de la República, a Pre-Texts workshop was held at the Instituto Caro y Cuervo in Bogotá, Colombia in November 2012. Prof. Doris Sommer facilitated the workshop. Participants included more than thirty representatives from various local foundations, cultural and artistic organizations, museums, and universities.

Each day started with a warm-up exercise and the “Off on a Tangent” activity. After exploring the chosen literary text— in this case, a scene from Prometheus Bound by Aeschylus — through the lens of different artistic expressions, each session ended with all participants answering the question “What did we do?”

On day five of the workshop, participants were asked to reflect on the contributions of the Pre-Texts methodology to their practices and commit to multiplying the training in order to develop intellectual and civic values through the arts.
