In June 2012, Prof. Doris Sommer was the keynote speaker at the SALALM LVII held in Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago. The theme of the conference was “Popular Culture: Arts and Social Change in Latin America.” She led a Pre-Texts workshop for 25 librarians from universities in Trinidad & Tobago, Barbados, Latin America and the United States. Local institutions supplied decorative materials and costumes from carnival performances for the workshop.
SALALM (Seminar on the Acquisition of Latin American Library Materials) is an organization of librarians and academics whose primary focus is Latin American Studies. Its mission is the control and dissemination of bibliographic information of Latin American publications and the development of library collections in support of educational research on Latin America. Promotion of institutional collaboration to achieve better library service is an equally important priority. SALALM is also concerned with the unique challenges librarians in Latin America and
the Caribbean face along with the development of library science in the region.
